How to Delete Telegram Account
Permanently or Temporarily
Step-by-Step Guide • What Happens After • Data Recovery • Reactivation Tips
There are plenty of legitimate reasons someone might want to delete their Telegram account. Privacy concerns, switching to a new phone number, taking a break from social apps, or simply wanting to start fresh — all of these are valid. Whatever your reason, Telegram gives you full control over your account and your data.
Before you proceed, it’s worth understanding that Telegram offers two distinct paths: temporary deactivation (where your account goes dormant but can be recovered) and permanent deletion (which removes everything forever and cannot be undone). This guide covers both in full detail.
One important thing to know upfront: Telegram’s account deletion is handled through a web-based tool, not directly inside the app. This is by design — it prevents accidental deletions. You’ll need your registered phone number and access to receive an SMS or call to that number.
These two options are fundamentally different. Make sure you understand which one applies to your situation before taking action.
⏳ Temporary — Auto-Delete Timer
🗑️ Permanent — Instant Deletion
The permanent deletion process is done through Telegram’s official web tool. Follow these steps exactly.
Open the Official Telegram Deactivation Page
On any browser (phone or desktop), go to: my.telegram.org/deactivate — This is Telegram’s official account deletion tool. Do not use any third-party sites.
Enter Your Phone Number
Type the phone number linked to your Telegram account in international format (e.g., +92xxxxxxxxxx for Pakistan, +91xxxxxxxxxx for India). Click Next.
Receive & Enter the Verification Code
Telegram will send a confirmation code to your Telegram app (not SMS). Open your Telegram app, check the Telegram service messages, and enter the 5-digit code on the website.
Click “Delete My Account”
After entering the code, you’ll see the deletion page. You may be asked for a reason (optional). Click the red “Delete My Account” button to confirm. This action is instant and irreversible.
Confirm Final Deletion
A final confirmation prompt will appear. Confirm once more and your account will be permanently deleted within seconds. You’ll be logged out of all devices automatically.
Before You Delete — Read This
⚠️ If you are an admin of a Telegram channel or group, transfer admin rights to another member first. Otherwise the channel/group gets deleted permanently along with your account.
⚠️ Download your data first if you want to keep any media. Go to Settings → Data and Storage → Export Telegram Data before deleting.
⚠️ If you have an active Telegram Premium subscription, cancel it first through the App Store or Google Play to avoid continued billing.
If you just want a break and aren’t sure about permanent deletion, the auto-delete timer is the safer option. Here’s how to configure it:
Open Telegram Settings
Launch the Telegram app → Tap the hamburger menu (three lines) or your profile icon → Select Settings.
Go to Privacy and Security
Inside Settings, tap Privacy and Security. Scroll down to the “Account” section at the bottom of the page.
Tap “Delete My Account”
You’ll see a dropdown option with timer choices: 1 Month, 3 Months, 6 Months, or 1 Year. Select your preferred inactivity period.
Save the Setting
The timer is now active. If you don’t log into Telegram within the selected period, your account will auto-delete. Simply logging in resets the timer.
Pro Tip
Setting the timer to 1 month means if you log in even once within any 30-day period, your account stays active. It’s the closest thing Telegram has to a “pause” option.
Most users who are undecided choose the 6-month timer as a safety net — it gives plenty of time to reconsider while keeping the account dormant.
Understanding what gets deleted — and what doesn’t — helps you make an informed decision:
💬 Your Messages
Messages you sent in private chats remain visible to the other person. They are not deleted from their end. Only your account is removed — your messages stay as “Deleted Account.”
👥 Groups You’re In
You are automatically removed from all groups. Groups you created but had other admins continue to exist. Groups where you were the only admin get deleted.
📢 Your Channels
Channels you own are permanently deleted along with all their posts and subscribers. Transfer ownership before deleting if you want the channel to survive.
📁 Saved Media
All media in your Saved Messages, cloud storage, and private chats is wiped from Telegram’s servers. Download anything you want to keep before proceeding.
📞 Your Phone Number
Your phone number is freed immediately. Someone else can register a new Telegram account with your same number right after deletion.
🔄 Re-Registration
You can create a brand new Telegram account with the same phone number at any time after deletion. But no previous data, contacts, or chats can be recovered.
| Item | Permanent Delete | Auto-Timer (Inactive) |
|---|---|---|
| Your profile & username | ✗ Deleted | Preserved during timer |
| Messages you sent (your view) | ✗ Deleted | Preserved |
| Messages visible to others | Remain (shows “Deleted Account”) | Remain visible |
| Groups you own (sole admin) | ✗ Deleted | Preserved |
| Channels you own | ✗ Deleted | Preserved |
| Saved Messages / media | ✗ Deleted | Preserved |
| Contact list | ✗ Deleted | Preserved |
| Phone number freed | ✓ Immediately | ✗ Still linked |
| Can reactivate | ✗ Never | ✓ Just log in |
The process is the same across all platforms since it uses the web tool, but here’s device-specific guidance:
| Device | Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Open browser → my.telegram.org/deactivate | Chrome or Firefox works best |
| iPhone / iOS | Open Safari → my.telegram.org/deactivate | Same process, verification code sent to Telegram app |
| Windows PC | Any browser → my.telegram.org/deactivate | Fastest experience on desktop |
| Mac | Safari or Chrome → my.telegram.org/deactivate | Identical to Windows process |
| Web (Telegram Web) | Cannot delete directly from web client | Must use the deactivation portal |
Deleting a Telegram account is a permanent, irreversible action — and Telegram has designed it that way intentionally. The two-step verification process exists to prevent accidental deletions, not to make it difficult.
If you’re unsure, use the auto-delete timer as a “soft break” — it gives you 1 to 12 months to reconsider while keeping your data intact. If you’re certain you want out permanently, make sure you’ve exported your data, transferred channel/group ownership, and cancelled any Premium subscriptions first.
